This is such a shame for a team that has boatloads of money..
Legendary Toronto Maple Leafs radio broadcaster Joe Bowen is retiring at the end of this season, ending nearly 50 years in the game.
Bowen has been the voice of Leafs' broadcasts since 1982 and has called over 3,800 games during an absolutely stellar career.
Last summer when Bowen made the announcement that 2025-26 would be his final season, he failed to explain why exactly he has decided to retire but he did maintain that he's not being pushed out by the executives at Sportsnet or their parent company Rogers. Today though, Bowen admitted to Leafs insider Simon Dingley that part of the reason that he's hanging up the mic is due to changes in Sportsnet's and the Leafs' broadcasting decisions. Particularly, Bowen says he doesn't agree with the decision to have radio broadcasters call road games from TV monitors at a studio in Toronto.
In other words: Rogers and the Leafs are too cheap to pay Bowen to travel and call the game live-in person.
From Bowen himself:
“For the last 5 years we’ve had to (broadcast) road games off TV monitors. That’s not what I signed up for.”
Hard to argue with that.
Some of the Leafs' biggest moments in history have come on the road and Bowen features front in center in those moments. The fact is that you simply can't manufacture the energy that Bowen is known for from a cheap studio in Toronto... he has to be in the building. Again, I can't argue with the guy for making the decision to walk away. The landscape of sports media has changed significantly in the past few years, and not for the better.
