A brotherly reunion is taking place in Dallas as the Stars announced on Tuesday that they have signed veteran defenceman Jordie Benn to a professional tryout contract. He will play to earn an NHL contract during training camp and the preseason.

Therefore he is joining his brother Jamie, captain of the team : some extra motivation to crack the roster.

This is an attempted comeback for Benn, who missed most of the 2022-23 season with injuries but played 12 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs and another 23 for their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

Now at 36 years, if he succeeds in taking a spot in Dallas, it will be his second stint with the team as he played alongside his brother Jamie during the first six seasons of his NHL career from 2012-2017.

He also played for the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets, and Minnesota Wild. In total he’s played 607 games between six different NHL teams.

Back in 2012, the Stars took a chance on Benn as an undrafted player after he spent a season in the ECHL, then one in the Central Hockey League, then finally two campaigns in the Stars’ organisation for the Texas Stars in the American Hockey League.

This could be a second chance for Benn to rejoin his brother and play for a Stanley Cup contender in 2023-24.
