It seems like one of the National Hockey League's elite goaltenders has fallen out of favor within his own team.
The Minnesota Wild are currently barely clinging off to a playoff spot after a really bad stretch of games and it seems like the cracks may be starting to show in the Minnesota Wild locker room. Surprisingly one of the biggest issues for the Wild during their poor stretch of play has been their goaltending and more specifically the performance of star goaltender Devan Dubnyk. That may come as a surprise to many who do not closely follow the Wild as Dubnyk has consistently been one of the organizations top performers, but his current form leaves a lot to be desired.
In fact since returning from an appearance at the 2019 National Hockey League All-Star Game the Wild's #1 goaltender has managed to pick up just a single win, posting a record of 1 - 4 - 2 over the past 7 games. That of course leaves a great deal to be desired as far as the Wild are concerned and after another shaky performance on Friday night it seems like Minnesota Wild head coach Bruce Boudreau may have finally seen enough. Asked about a potential change in goal after the bad performance Boudreau made it crystal clear that he was seriously contemplating making a move between the pipes.
“It’ll be a conversation that the coaches and the goalie coach have tomorrow and the GM and we’ll see what transpires," said Boudreau after the loss. "There’s a couple things. One, we’re not blind. We saw how they went in, but the other thing that bothers me is we do this all the time. We get them down and you don’t get that killer instinct and you stop playing and you try to defend all the time and it’s a losing way to play."
The mere fact that Boudreau is entertaining the conversation at this stage of the playoff race is a very bad sign for both Dubnyk as an individual player as well as for the Wild as an organization. They can ill afford to have their top goalie let in an average of nearly 4 goals per night since the All-Star break, and it sounds like they may have to bump Dubnyk down the depth chart in order to prevent that from continuing.
