Bruce Boudreau to take over as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

Boudreau headed to Vancouver.

We have some pretty wild news to report.

According to a breaking news report from National Hockey League insider Elliot Friedman, former Minnesota Wild head coach Bruce Boudreau is expected to be named the next head coach of the Vancouver Canucks.

When you consider the fact that Travis Green hasn't even been fired as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, this is a rather stunning report from Friedman. If it were coming from any other NHL insider I would have my doubts, however Friedman has been impeccable over the last several years and it seems likely that he would have all his ducks in a row before making such a major announcement.

This honestly feels like a rough way for Travis Green to go out, if he is indeed fired by the Canucks organization, and as many have already speculated I believe he will quickly find himself a new job in the NHL.

I also feel for Bruce Boudreau here who is now going into another tough situation as a head coach. His last kick at the can was as the head coach of the Minnesota Wild, but he had an aging roster on his hands and that is evident by the personnel decisions that were made following his departure. The Wild look like an entirely different team now with a much younger roster overall, but unfortunately for Boudreau he was let go before getting the chance to work with that roster.

This time around he will be inheriting a last place team. The Canucks have been so bad as of late that they have fallen to dead last in the NHL's Pacific Division, even behind a Seattle Kraken expansion team that has struggled this season. It is hard to believe that merely swapping out the head coach is going to be enough to turn this team around, but I have little doubt that fans in Vancouver are happy that the team has at least done something in response to this catastrophic season.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, Boudreau can do differently with this team moving forward.

Update: Pierre LeBrun reports Boudreau's contract is for 2 years.
