Bruce Cassidy finally lands a new job!

Hockey Canada rolled out several key additions to its women's national team program on Tuesday, bringing in fresh faces across coaching and management. But the name that jumped off the page was Bruce Cassidy, the Stanley Cup champion who has been stuck in NHL limbo for months.

Cassidy, who guided the Vegas Golden Knights to a championship during his four-year run with the franchise, will serve as a special advisor to Hockey Canada's women's program. It marks a notable pivot for a coach who has been vocal about wanting to return to an NHL bench.

The 59-year-old was dismissed by Vegas on March 29, with the organization bringing in John Tortorella as his replacement. Since that firing, Cassidy's path back to the NHL has been blocked by the Golden Knights themselves.

Both the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings reportedly sought permission to interview Cassidy for their coaching vacancies, but Vegas declined those requests. Because Cassidy remains technically under contract with the Golden Knights despite being fired, the club retains the right to prevent him from pursuing other NHL opportunities.

This is not Cassidy's first involvement with Hockey Canada. He previously served as an assistant coach for the men's national team at both the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Olympics. His new advisory position, however, shifts him into the women's side of the program for the first time.

Cassidy was not the only significant hire announced. Kori Cheverie was named head coach of the women's national team after serving as bench boss of the Montreal Victoire since the PWHL club's formation in 2023-24. Cheverie has been an assistant coach for Canada at the past five IIHF World Championship tournaments and was also on staff at both the 2022 and 2026 Olympics.

The special advisor title gives Cassidy a meaningful hockey role while his NHL future remains in limbo. Whether this appointment satisfies his competitive itch or simply keeps him engaged until a phone call comes from an NHL franchise.
