Bruce Cassidy hints at big changes after 2nd round playoff exit.
Bruce Cassidy did not hold back when discussing what his team needs to fix over the summer.
There is no shame in losing to a team like the Edmonton Oilers, a team that arguably boasts the number one and number two hockey players in the world in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but nonetheless the Vegas Golden Knights have established a standard where second round exits simply aren't good enough.
That standard was on full display on Saturday as several members of the Golden Knights faced the media for the final time this season during their exit interviews. Head coach Bruce Cassidy spoke to the media and was asked about the team's inability to score in important games, an issue that the Golden Knights intend to aggressively address this summer if Cassidy words today are any indication.
Cassidy was asked about instilling a shoot-first type of mentality into his roster, with the head coach hinting at the fact that his current players like to hold on to the puck a little too long.
"It's more of a game plan that everyone knows that the puck is going to the net," said Cassidy on Saturday. "Now you've got to build that in it doesn't happen overnight, especially if you have guys that like to hang on to pucks and make plays. It's personnel driven to... we know which guys will be back and... we have to start looking at that."
As far as how he plans to get that message across to the players that will still be in the Golden Knights locker room come next season? Well the message is rather simple.
"How you sell it is 'Hey we didn't score the last two games of the playoffs' so trying to build that in in November and December that's a bit of a message," said Cassidy. "When the going gets tough this is a way to generate."
Cassidy wasn't suggesting this would fix all of the teams goal scoring woes, but instead views it as an important tool to have in the repertoire when needed.
"Maybe it works and maybe it doesn't, doesn't mean you're gonna score goals just because you throw it at the net," said Cassidy. "I think that we have to look seriously at that."
Cassidy spoke at length about a variety of issues the team will face this summer and you can listen to his full comments in the lengthy exit interview below:
