The Boston Bruins were busy on Tuesday, signing goalie Tuukka Rask to a prorated one-year, $1 million deal through the remainder of the season. The deal will see Rask earn $545,000.

Now that that’s off the list, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes the Bruins are shifting their attention elsewhere, potentially looking for a boost up front. And he suggests, in his latest 32 Thoughts column, that GM Don Sweeney should go after Max Domi of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“As Boston welcomes back Tuukka Rask, wonder if Max Domi makes any sense for the Bruins.”

Yes, once again, Domi’s name is mentioned in trade chatter. A few weeks ago, insider Frank Seravalli of Daily Face-Off reported that “there’s no doubt” that the Blue Jackets want to move the forward because of his expiring contract.

During the offseason, the Blue Jackets attempted to move Domi with no luck, unable to find a partner, probably due to Domi’s $5.3 million cap hit for the entire season.

However, it is likely now that contenders see him as a good rental candidate, especially with Domi finding his groove back in Columbus this season. In 23 games, he has eight goals and 16 total points. When looking at that kind of production, he could be an excellent addition for a contender’s second or third line and we can understand why the Bruins would target him.

The Bruins are however expected to have some competition on the market with teams like the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, and Edmonton Oilers who could use a versatile forward like him in their middle six.
Let’s see if the Bruins attempt to get him as Friedman wonders - where will Domi end up?
