It now seems abundantly clear that the Boston Bruins are looking to add a scoring winger, but whether or not they are going to be able to get a deal done remains to be seen at this time.

The Bruins, and more specifically Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney, have had several irons in the fire but thus far none of the attempted moves from the Bruins general manager have worked out for them. Although we can't know for certain exactly what Sweeney has been doing behind the scenes we do know that the Bruins have missed out on at least two of the big trades that we have seen over the past few days.

First, according to a report from TSN National Hockey League insider Bob McKenzie the Bruins were "the closest" team in the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference to landing now former Detroit Red Wings' forward Gustav Nyquist. Nyquist of course was dealt in the late hours of the night last night to the San Jose Sharks, waiving his no trade clause with the Red Wings in order to allow that trade to happen. It is unclear if Nyquist would have waived to come to Boston but given that the Bruins were reportedly close to a deal I would have to assume that the Red Wings had some indication that he would be willing to go to a Stanley Cup contender.

That however does not appear to be the only deal that Sweeney and the Bruins missed out on. According to a report from TSN National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBrun the Bruins also attempted to acquire Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Dzingel from the Senators, although they missed on that deal as well. As we now know Dzingel would eventually be dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets where he will join former Ottawa Senators teammate Matt Duchene,. There's no question that a winger on pace for 30 goals this season would have been a huge help to the Bruins, but again it seems the Bruins came up short with Columbus likely making the better offer.

That being said though not all hope is lost just yet as the Bruins still have 3 big names on their list of potential players to add. According to TSN National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger the Bruins remain in the hunt for Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, Ottawa Senators star forward Mark Stone, and Tyler Toffoli of the Los Angeles Kings.
