Earlier today reports surfaced indicated that the Bruins had big plans to improve their blue lines.

It was comments from TSN insider Darren Dreger that revealed the Bruins had put forward an offer that included a first round draft pick in the hope of acquiring defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, however according to Bruins insider Joe Haggerty of CSNNE they will have some stiff competition in that regard from two other National Hockey League teams.

The Bruins will have company, however, as the Edmonton Oilers have also expressed interest to the Blues in the puck-moving defenseman, according to a source.

That same hockey source also indicated that the Philadelphia Flyers will be entering the Shattenkirk sweepstakes as well, and that would make at least three teams Don Sweeney could get into a bidding war with for the All-Star defenseman.

It will be a tough sell for Boston who will likely want some assurances that they can sign Shattenkirk long term if they are giving up a first round pick, however they do have one advantage. Shattenkirk won a national championship with Boston University back in 2007, and despite that being nearly 10 years ago now, there is a level of familiarity there that could help them close the deal.
