Boston Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards finally emerged from his silence when it comes to the fat-shaming comments he made towards Tampa Bay Lightning’s Pat Maroon earlier this week.

On Tuesday night during the Bruins’ game against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning, Edwards called out three time Stanley Cup champion Pat Maroon for tipping the scales at 238 pounds.

“Listed at 238 pounds. That was Day One of training camp and I have got a feeling he’s had a few more pizzas before then and now.”

NESN’s Andy Brickley weighed in as well and joked that his listed weight was prior to his pregame meal. It prompted Edwards to go on a fasting tangent.

“Inadvertent fasting for Pat Maroon is like going four hours without a meal,”cracked Edwards. “But hey three Cups in a row who can argue with his formula?”

On Wednesday, Maroon announced on social media that “in support of those struggling with mental health, bullying and body image” the veteran forward making a 2,000 donation in the name of the Bruins’ broadcaster to Tampa Bay Thrives, a nonprofit assisting those struggling with mental health and substance use issues by providing navigation, access and awareness. He raised over $50,000.

On Friday, insider Fluto Shinzawa updated his story with Edwards’s statement:

“I am sensitive to the subject of body image and I didn’t intend to offend anyone. In the course of a two-and-a-half hour broadcast, it was a light-hearted attempt to point out that Pat Maroon, who I also regularly praise for his camaraderie with teammates through the years, uses his size to be a difficult competitor. He’s an effective player with three Stanley Cup rings — something I also made it a point to say Tuesday night. I have reached out to the Lightning to connect with Pat.”

Edwards appears to sidestep the issue with a very late comment on the situation. At least, Maroon managed to help a lot of people thanks to Edwards’ stupidity.
