On Thursday, Boston Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards met with Tampa Bay Lightning forward Pat Maroon, hoping to apologize for the fat-sharing comments he said about him back in November. Edwards mocked Maroon’s weight, and the forward choose to turn the negative into a positive. The day after Edward’s insult went viral, Maroon sent out a tweet announcing a $2,000 donation in the broadcaster’s name to Tampa Bay Thrives, which helps those dealing with depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorder. In all, $60,000 was raised.

Yesterday, Edwards went into the Lightning’s dressing room to talk to Maroon, and later, he revealed to Joe Smith of The Athletic what was said in their discussion. Edwards admitted that Maroon was upset, who finally told Edwards he had “moved on.”

“It was not intended to be mean-spirited. I went to Pat and explained that,” Edwards said. “He got his feelings off his chest, and I listened to all of it. I was not going to walk away. I let him go as long as he could. I wanted him to know I respected him as much as any NHL player for lasting as long as he has. Every single player who has played in the NHL is an unbelievable athlete, and I made that clear.”

Clearly, Maroon did not shy away from telling Edwards how he felt. As for the Bruins’ broadcaster, he refuses to say if he regrets using those words to speak of Maroon.

“I try not to regret things. I try to learn from them,” Edwards added. “The latitude which I live in has sharply decreased because there’s corporate concerns about turning a certain segment of the audience off. … It’s too late for me to change my style, but …

“I didn’t make fun of people who are struggling with mental illness. I didn’t use the word ‘fat’ at any time. Intentional misreading of my intent ran rampant.”

Maroon did not talk about the meeting since he wasn’t available for comment after his meeting with Edwards. But the latter knows that if this has been on the ice, he would have lost that fight!

“I’m 148 pounds dripping wet,” Edwards said. “So it wasn’t a hockey fight. But in that vein, we got it out. We had an understanding and we move on.”
