The Boston Bruins took their first loss of the 2023-24 last nught at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks. They say they’d already moved on, but it will be hard for forward Jakub Lauko to forget his injury as quickly.

Lauko suffered a fracture during Tuesday night ’s 3-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. The winger was down by the boards and got caught up high near his left eye by the skate of forward Jason Dickinson. He immediately left the game bloodied with fans and players fearing he had poked his eye out though head coach Jim confirmed postgame that “nothing touched the eye” and he got stitched up.

Ahead of last night’s loss in Anaheim, Montgomery mentioned the latest update on Lauko.

“Jakub’s got, you know, a fracture and he’s going to be out at least a week until the swelling goes down. He gets re-evaluated in a week,” Montgomery said.

On Friday, Lauko provided his own update through social media when he posted a picture that will make you cringe. He joked : “modelling career defo in jeopardy, ut let’s just say I was very very lucky.”

He was indeed. The play was a complete freak accident, but the skate blade could have gotten to his eye, impair his vision for the rest of his life and most likely put an end to his NHL career.

Before he got injured, the 23-year-old had played in six of Boston’s games this season, but has yet to register a point.

A day after the incident, he had joked about the way he looked in the morning, posting this picture from The Lord of the Rings : Return of the King character Gothmog, the lieutenant of the Witch-king in the Third Age from Minas Morgul.

I have to say Lauko still looks way better than that orc, even with the black eye and the scar.
