Boston’s top-four defenseman target slipped through their fingers, but the Bruins are ready to swing big before the trade deadline.
The Boston Bruins made waves in the trade market this weekend with an ambitious attempt to acquire top-four defenseman Rasmus Andersson, signaling they’re serious about upgrading their blue line before the March 6 trade deadline.
Reports surfaced that Boston had been in advanced discussions with the Calgary Flames about Andersson, even appearing to be “in the driver’s seat” at one point. The Bruins reportedly made a serious offer, including young defensive prospect Mason Lohrei and a first-round pick.
Negotiations with Andersson’s camp about a contract extension were described as “pretty serious,” though ultimately, Calgary traded him to the Vegas Golden Knights instead.
Despite missing out on Andersson, the move underscored the Bruins’ intent to be buyers at the deadline. General Manager Don Sweeney and his staff are clearly focused on shoring up the top four on the blue line, seeking a right-shot defenseman who can contribute immediately to a Cup-contending roster.
With Andersson now in Vegas, Boston may look at alternative options, potentially more affordable short-term pieces, to fill that need. While some big-name reunions seem unlikely due to cap or trade-list restrictions, other veteran options could provide the experience and stability Boston is looking for in a playoff push, such as Luke Schenn of the Winnipeg Jets or Connor Murphy of the Chicago Blackhawks.
We will have to stay tuned…
Even though their primary target slipped away, Boston’s willingness to make bold moves sends a clear message: the Bruins aren’t sitting still, and the trade deadline could still bring surprises for a team aiming to remain in contention.
