Bruins reveal why Eriksson was not traded.

Most, including this writer, expected that the Boston Bruins would trade forward Loui Eriksson, their best trading chip at the deadline. However the deadline has come and gone, and Eriksson is still a Bruin, and now fans are legitimately concerned that the top piece they received in the Tyler Seguin trade could be gone for nothing.

On Thursday Bruins president Cam Neely explained why the deal wasn't made, and there's two ways to look at it, either the Bruins made the right call to maximize their potential this season, or they held off on making a deal that could have fetched a significant return because they wanted too much.

“We explored moving Loui — it’s no secret,” Neely said as per NESN. “And we felt if we got the return that made sense for the club that we would end up probably moving Loui. We weren’t getting the return that we felt we deserved for a guy like Loui — what he meant to the team this year, how well he’s played this year. So, having said that, we said, ‘We’re a playoff team. Let’s see what we can do to try to improve our club and improve our chances of getting into the playoffs.’ ”

Short of winning a Stanley Cup this season, there may be nothing the Bruins faithful would accept from an organization that in it's recent history has made some questionable decisions in both trades and free agency, many fans are still bitter about losing Johnny Boychuk, but Neely has asked for patience.

“I ask for a little patience of what we’re trying to accomplish here,” said Neely, who added that ownership did not mandate a playoff appearance this season. “I know there’s expectations from media and our fans, and everyone wants things to turn around quick.”

There is no guarantee he will get it.
