The Bruins are on fire.

The Boston Bruins are having themselves one hell of a season, defying all expectations that even the most diehard of fans had for them coming into this season and leaving no doubt about who the team to beat this season is going to be.

The Bruins currently stand atop the Atlantic division with the best record in the NHL with 32 wins, 4 regulation losses and 4 overtime losses so far this season. That includes a very solid stretch of 8-0-2 over their last 10 games, and thus far there has been no real sign of the Bruins slowing down.

While all of that is of course impressive, you truly start to see how special of a season the Bruins are having when you compare it to some of the top teams of the past.

Through the first 40 games of the regular season, only the 1929-30 Boston Bruins managed to pick up more wins, with 35 victories compared to the 32 victories the Bruins have claimed this season. In fact to find another team that had 32 wins in their first 40 games of the season we would have to travel all the way back to 1944-45 to watch the Montreal Canadiens play.

All of this has put the Bruins on pace to break the single season record for standing points collected by an NHL team, a record that has stood for nearly 50 years. What makes it all the sweeter for Bruins fans, should this come to pass, is that the record is currently held by their arch-rivals, the aforementioned Montreal Canadiens.

The Canadiens set that record with a whopping 132 points during the 1976-77 season, but with their blistering start to the season the Bruins have currently set a pace that would see them end the season with 139 points should they be able to maintain that pace.

That would be enough to take sole possession of the record for themselves, and snatch it away from the Canadiens in the process, but there is still plenty of hockey to be played.
