Brutal blow to Gavin McKenna ahead of 2026 NHL Draft

A controversial take is making waves.

A blunt anonymous scouting comment about Gavin McKenna is starting to circulate across NHL draft circles, and it’s adding a surprising layer of skepticism to a player widely projected to go first overall in 2026.

According to The Athletic, one NHL executive offered high praise for McKenna’s offensive ceiling, but followed it with a striking comparison that has quickly caught attention.

“He’s going to score a ton in the NHL. He’s special with the puck and on the power play,” the executive said. “My concern is he’s like Artemi Panarin. He’ll get his accolades, but he’ll also be on three to four teams and never make real noise in the playoffs.”

The quote has sparked discussion because McKenna has long been viewed as a franchise-changing talent rather than a projected journeyman star. The 18-year-old forward has dominated virtually every level he’s played at, building a résumé that includes standout seasons in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers and a strong freshman campaign at Penn State, where he emerged as one of the NCAA’s most dynamic offensive players.

Standing tall with elite skating, high-end playmaking ability, and advanced hockey IQ, McKenna has been widely labeled as the consensus top prospect in the 2026 NHL Draft class.

That projection was further reinforced by recent reporting from Boston Bruins writer Shawn Hutcheon, who noted that the Toronto Maple Leafs have already informed McKenna they intend to select him first overall later this month in Buffalo.

Still, even for a player with McKenna’s pedigree, the anonymous scout’s comments highlight how divided opinion can be at the top of the draft.

For a prospect long considered a “safe” franchise cornerstone pick, the conversation is now shifting: not about whether he goes first overall, but what kind of NHL career will follow once he does.
