Changes that have been made to the Pittsburgh Penguins lately have angered many fans and players, including captain Sidney Crosby, who voiced his frustration at the Jake Guentzel trade to the Carolina Hurricanes made by general manager Kyle Dubas.
The frustration from Crosby has led pundits to hint at rumours of No. 87 looking to be traded or sign elsewhere, with a Stanley Cup contender, for another chance at the championship before hanging up the skates. However, Sid is eligible to sign an extension in Pittsburgh starting on July 1st, and there is a sense that he is looking to retire as a Penguin.
All of these strong emotions could lead to a significant move this summer, especially if Crosby’s emotions play into this: according to Josh Yohe of The Athletic, the Penguins could enter the race to sign Guentzel, who is due to become a free agent at the end of the season.
“Team sources have told me in recent days not to be surprised if he signs with the Penguins again this summer,” Yohe writes. “Do I think he will? No. But I think it’s in play.”
It has been well-documented that the Penguins’ roster was not pleased with seeing Guentzel be dealt, and if they can find a way to sign him back in Pittsburgh, the dressing room would only be ecstatic to see him return. With the salary cap is expected to increase by about $4.5 million next season, the team could make room for Guentzel as Crosby would probably be more than willing to re-sign with a significant discount to have him back.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that emotions have been quite intense for Guentzel as well, revealing in his latest 32 Thoughts column how emotional the winger was when he found out he was leaving the Penguins.
“Nine days after his trade, Jake Guentzel was still emotional describing the goodbyes to those Penguins he won a Cup with. GM Kyle Dubas went to Guentzel’s home to inform him, then the winger went to the rink to meet with those teammates.”
This just feels like a reunion could be possible!
