Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was the favorite to win the Fastest Skater Skill competition on Friday night.
He was first to take on the challenge, but blew a tire on the final turn and went spilling into the boards, without wearing a helmet. Good thing some cushions and protection were added for the event.
Makar was not injured, but his teammates Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen got worried when they saw the blue liner spilling.
Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov and Los Angeles Kings' Kevin Fiala ended up moving on to the final of the fastest skater competition.
Makar never had a real shot...
In an interview with Sportsnet's David Amber during the evening, Makar confirmed that he did not injure himself and was just embarrassed by his fall. He is however happy to take part in this All-Star weekend.
Here are the results of the first round, with the top two advancing.
Andrei Svechnikov, Carolina Hurricanes - 13.75 seconds
Kevin Fiala, Los Angeles Kings - 13.9
Chandler Stephenson , Vegas Golden Knights - 14.19
Dylan Larkin , Detroit Red Wings - 14.55
Cale Makar, Colorado Avalanche - 22.3
