Calgary poised to pull off two more major trades

League sources suggest the Flames aren’t done reshaping their roster just yet.

Just a couple of days after the massive trade that sent defenseman Rasmus Andersson out of Calgary as the Flames sent him to the Vegas Golden Knights, more significant transactions could get done in Alberta.

The trade chatter is heating up around Flames’ Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman ahead of the Olympic break and the March 6 trade deadline.

During Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Darren Dreger reported the Flames are open to fielding calls for Kadri, but are still not itching to move him.

“Nazem Kadri wants to do what’s best for the Calgary Flames, but he also wants to chase and win a Stanley Cup,” Dreger said. “I would say there’s developing interest. There’s some tire kicking from Toronto, Montreal, Colorado, L.A., maybe the Dallas Stars, but there’s still a lot of work to get done and there’s no rush as far as Calgary’s concerned.”

In 49 games with the Flames so far this season, Kadri has registered nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points. He is in the fourth season of a seven-year, $49 million contract and owns a 13-team no-trade list as part of his deal.

When it comes to Coleman, who has one more season left on his contract after this one, general manager Craig Conroy feels more hesitant about parting with the beloved veteran, but Pierre LeBrun revealed he could be moved as well. LeBrun’s take from last night’s Insider Trading on TSN:

“I think his answer in some ways was revealing; he said, “It’s a tough one.” He went on to say that he’s not going to say that those guys are definitely not moving, but he’s also open to taking calls. This about the Flames getting younger and continuing to transition that roster.

“They’re quite ready to keep Coleman; he’s an important leader in that dressing room, but they can’t say 100 per cent because there might be an offer that puts it over the top, given the interest that there is on the market for Coleman.”

Kadri may be considered the top trade bait as of now in Calgary, but it sure feels like more than one major trade could take place in the coming week for the Flames.
