The veteran goalie is at a crossroads.
This just in, Edmonton Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard has cleared waivers and can now be assigned to the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.
The 33 year old was placed on waivers yesterday after effectively being supplanted by new Oilers back up Connor Ingram. With Pickard, Ingram and starter Tristan Jarry all on the Oilers' main roster, something had to give and it was Pickard who was the odd man out.
There was some belief that he might garner a waiver claim, but with today's deadline coming and going he's now free to be assigned to the Oilers' AHL affiliate in Bakersfield.
You have to wonder if this is the end of the road for Pickard's NHL career. He's had opportunities, especially in Edmonton, but he has failed to nail down a spot as a bonafide NHLer for over a decade now. It seems like he's destined to be an AHL star who's just not good enough to be a regular, every day NHL goalie.
