For many years now Zdeno Chara has been the quarterback of the Bruins defence core. He has been everything a Bruins fan could want from a captain. He has been the heart and soul of the team. However reality is a fickle thing and at 37 years old, Chara is no longer a young man. The Bruins are in desperate need of scoring help and the assets they possess at the moment are not getting the job done. The Bruins do not have a single player with more than 6 goals on the season, and rank second to last in overall scoring. Chara is a perennial Norris Trophy candidate and a big body on the blue-line. While defensive prospects like Joe Morrow and Dougie Hamilton are far from being complete players, there is no reason to believe they will not get there eventually. Chara carries an annual cap hit of over $6.916 million, but many teams would be in the market for the behemoth defenceman. However, Chara does have a full no-movement clause. Chara is past his prime and the fact he has slowed down in recent years is no surprise. It became more apparent in last spring's playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens, although he was not totally to blame. Parting ways with such a great player may be difficult, but the question remains as to how long the Bruins can wait before trying to make a sensible move.
