There's been a lot of finger pointing inside the Edmonton Oilers organization lately, including the firing of head coach Dallas Eakins, but we believe that the root of the problem is much deeper than the head coach. For that we want to take you back to a report that is now 11 years old, back to 2003 when Kevin Lowe showed the entire hockey world what kind of leader he was. Back in 2003 the Oilers had a player by the name of Mike Comrie who was looking to get out of town, and it appeared that the Oilers had a deal in place. They would send Comrie to Anaheim in exchange for a first round draft pick, and an unknown prospect, some nobody by the name of Corey Perry. However that deal never happened, and the reason why is pretty much entirely to blame on Kevin Lowe. From a CBC report:
He supposedly asked Comrie to pony up $2.5 million US to complete the transaction. "If he was willing to do that, fine," Lowe said. "If not, we'd sit and wait until we felt we got the deal we needed. "Unfortunately, this wasn't meant to be public. But agents have a great ability to get this stuff out. "The reality is we're more than happy to sit and wait until the best deal is possible. It's not about vindication.
That's right, Kevin Lowe, the man who recently told reporters not to question him because he had more cups than anyone else in hockey, asked that his own player pay $2.5 million dollars in order to be traded.  Instead Comrie was eventually traded to another team, the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Jeff Woywitka, a first round pick in 2004 (Rob Schremp), and a third round pick in 2005 (Danny Syvret). So naturally today he is President of Hockey Operations for the Edmonton Oilers, effectively he is the man at the helm of the Oilers franchise. The Oilers have one win in their last 16 games, if they ever expect to create a turn around then Kevin Lowe must go.
