The rivalry between Canada and the United States of America may have just led to some unexpected fun for fans tuning in to today's Gold Medal game between Canada and the USA.

On Friday, Premier of Ontario Doug Ford made a surprise announcement when he declared that bars in the province on Ontario would be allowed to open early and serve alcohol to customers ahead of the big game. Ford declared that bars would be allowed to open their doors as early as 6 am EST with the game set to get underway at 8:10 am EST.

"Let’s all come together, support local businesses and cheer on Team Canada!" said Ford in the social media post in which he announced the news.

Not to be outdone by their Canadian counterparts, American politicians south of the border quickly responded to the announcement from Doug Ford by making similar announcements of their own.

Governor of New York State Kathy Hochul announced on Saturday that Sunday would be a "gold medal morning" and as such she would be suspending enforcement of alcohol service hours from 6-10 am so bars and restaurants can open early. The announcement mirrored the one from Ford and I can only hope that it was done in the spirit of friendly competition, one that has now given fans the opportunity to go out and have a little extra fun on this Gold Medal morning.
