What a jaw-dropping game!
Canada avoided disaster in a heart-stopping three-on-three overtime against Czechia, snatching victory in the first minute of so of the extra frame of a tense quarterfinal. After regulation ended tied, the OT period was full of fast-paced end-to-end action, with Mitch Marner scoring the winner.
It almost look like it was the end of the Canadians when, with less than eight minutes left in the game, after a massive save by goalie Jordan Binnington on Radko Gudas, Ondrej Palat scored the go-ahead goal.
Tension rise, but so did Nick Suzuki, who tipped Devon Toews’ shot to tie things up with 3:27 to go. It was time for the extra frame, and many fans across Canada imagined Marner would be clutch again.
And he was.
Marner made sure Canada survived, and now, it's impossible to say that he cannot score a goal in an elimination game with a Maple Leaf on his chest.
The win keeps Team Canada’s gold medal hopes alive, offering a dramatic rebound after Crosby’s earlier injury scare and Czechia’s relentless pressure.
For Czechia, it’s a narrow defeat but a statement performance showing they can challenge the best in the world.
What an absolutely incredible game of hockey. Canada will play the lowest remaining seed after the two late games today.
