A Canadian politician has just issued a public call to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, one that I suspect many hockey fans will quickly get behind.

On Saturday, Danielle Smith, Alberta's 19th Premier, took to social media to make public comments regarding a recent petition that has gained popularity involving Canadian hockey icon Don Cherry. That petition calls for Cherry to receive the Order of Canada, one of the countries highest honors, for his contributions to his country over his lifetime for his work in the country's national sport, hockey, as well as his contributions related to Canadian veterans and his work with various charities over the years.

Smith on social media not only expressed her support for the petition but also called on Carney, a well known hockey fan, to extend his support to Cherry as well for the prestigious honor.

Here is Smith's message unedited and in full:

The Order of Canada is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement, dedication to community, and service to the nation.

It’s time for Prime Minister to join me and millions of our fellow Canadians in supporting the appointment of Don Cherry to the Order of Canada, one of our nation’s highest honours.

This shouldn’t even be up for debate. Don Cherry is a Canadian icon, a hockey legend and is loved by Albertans. He’s not just one of the greats, his word and opinion about our national sport is still treated as hockey gospel by millions of Canadians.

His contributions to Canadian sport and culture are undeniable, and the work he did to honour our nation’s veterans was an invaluable contribution to our country. He will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians.

So, put the puck in the net and give Grapes the recognition he deserves.

While I would always advise you to be skeptical of a politicians true motives, in this case it's hard to see a downside. While Cherry was involved in controversy later in his career, there is no disputing the incredible contributions he made to his country as a proud Canadian throughout his lifetime.

Whether or not Cherry will receive the support of the Prime Minister remains to be seen.
