A rival team has come calling when it comes to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Last week a scandal erupted across the National Hockey League when news broke revealing that the Vegas Golden Knights had not granted former head coach Bruce Cassidy permission to speak to the Edmonton Oilers about a potential coaching job, this despite the fact that the Golden Knights had fired Cassidy earlier in the season.

It is perhaps due to the intense backlash the Golden Knights have faced over that decision that the Toronto Maple Leafs have chosen not to go down the same path when a rival NHL team called them for very similar reasons.

According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Edmonton Oilers requested permission to speak to the recently fired Craig Berube. Additionally Friedman reports that the Oilers have been granted permission to speak to Berube, and as a result I suspect that conversation will take place in the very near future if it hasn't already.

I suspect this is a move that will be met with a great deal of controversy in Edmonton given that there were many who were surprised that former Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch was fired in the first place given his incredible run of success since taking over behind the bench. Combined with the fact that Berube was heavily criticized for how poorly the Maple Leafs played last season, I suspect that this will leave very little appetite for a potential Berube hire in Edmonton.

That being said it would hardly be the only questionable move of Stan Bowman's tenure as general manager of the Oilers since he took over that role, so I am definitely not ruling out the possibility that this could indeed happen.

Should the Oilers consider hiring Berube? Or do you think this would be a big mistake? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
