Earlier this week, reports were made that the Ottawa Senators are in the early stages of selling the team to an outside investor.

The Senators are owned by Anna and Olivia Melnyk, daughters of former long-time owner Eugene Melnyk who passed away in March of 2022. The Melnyk daughters have done an admirable job of guiding the team in the months since their father’s passing but it’s believed that the pair are looking to cash out and sell the franchise to someone else, while staying minority owners.

They could get the support of Canadian actor and Wrexham FC co-owner Ryan Reynolds, who according to People Magazine, is reportedly interested in buying the Senators if ever the team is put up for sale.

A recent report from Sportico estimates that the Sens are worth $655 million USD. But, here’s the kicker… if the Melnyks can secure a lease for the LeBreton Flats area of Ottawa, that evaluation could rise to as much as $1 billion.

According to PEOPLE’s source, “Reynolds has kept his (team interest) cards close to his chest. That is, until Tuesday when a Twitter user mentioned to him that the team was up for sale and the Spirited star replied with the hand-on-the-chin interested emoji.”

This would be the second time Reynolds gets involved in owning a professional sports team. In February 2021, Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney purchased the Welsh football club Wrexham AFC.
