The Canadiens and Devils are both trying to make a trade for the same player.
The Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils may be trying to get their hands on the same player, but of course only one of them will be able to make the trade.
Recently, Seattle Kraken insider Rob Simpson revealed that there is significant interest in Kraken forward Jared McCann, with Simpson specifically naming both the Canadiens and the Devils as the specific parties with a great deal of interest.
It should come as no surprise that McCann is attracting so much attention, with the veteran NHL forward fresh off the heels of 4 outstanding seasons in a row. McCann has been the Kraken's most lethal forward since they've joined the NHL and last season was no exception, with McCann recording 22 goals and 39 assists for a total of 61 points in just 82 games.
Combine that with the fact that McCann is on a great contract, and you could easily see why teams looking to take their next step forward would covet him. McCann will be entering the 4th year of a 5 year deal this upcoming season, a deal that carries an average annual value and cap hit of just $5 million per season.
The Kraken could also move McCann to make room for a player like former first round pick Shane Wright, allowing him to take on a bigger role in McCann's absence, but whether or not they believe Wright is ready for that role remains to be seen.
Either way, with a pair of NHL teams targeting the same player, the price to acquire McCann is likely going to be very high. Whether or not the Canadiens or the Devils can get this deal across the finish line remains to be seen.
