The Canadiens and Mammoth swap a forward for a defenseman.
We have a trade on Monday morning.
The news around this trade comes courtesy of National Hockey League insider Renaud Lavoie who is reporting that the Montreal Canadiens and Utah Mammoth have struck a 1 for 1 trade deal that will see a pair of young prospects who have failed to crack the NHL full-time get a new shot somewhere else.
In this deal the Canadiens are sending 22 year old forward Joshua Roy while the Mammoth are sending Maksymilian Szuber back the other way.
Roy was originally selected in the 5th round (150th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens and has only appeared in 38 career NHL games since. Over that stretch Roy has amassed 6 goals and 5 assists for a total of 11 points but as I mentioned has failed to establish himself as a consistent part of the Canadiens roster.
Szuber is a former 6th round draft pick (163rd overall) at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and he was selected by the now defunct Arizona Coyotes. He is of course now in the Mammoth's system but that hasn't earned him any additional opportunities at the NHL level. His lone game in the NHL came in the 2023-24 season when the team was still in Arizona, with his last two seasons spent entirely in the American Hockey League.
This won't change the future for either of these teams, but it will be a fresh start for both of these young men who likely were in need of one.
