The Montreal Canadiens are making adjustments ahead of Game 1 of their series against the Buffalo Sabres, with potential lineup changes on the horizon.

It appears Joe Veleno and Arber Xhekaj could both draw into the lineup, potentially replacing Brendan Gallagher and Jayden Struble as Montreal looks to fine-tune its group for the opening game. The moves would bring a mix of energy and physicality as the Canadiens prepare for a demanding series.

Montreal also enters the matchup with strong momentum from the goaltending position. Rookie goalie Jakub Dobes delivered a standout performance in the previous round, starting all seven games against the Tampa Bay Lightning and posting an impressive .923 save percentage.

The Canadiens’ core remains led by elite offensive talent in 50-goal scorer Cole Caufield, alongside emerging star defenseman Lane Hutson, who continues to play a key role in driving play from the blue line.

In goal, Dobes will face Alex Lyon of the Sabres, both having delivered strong performances so far this postseason.

The Canadiens and Sabres also know each other well. During the 2025-26 regular season, the two teams split their four meetings with identical 2-2 records. Each side scored 13 goals, and every game was decided by two goals or fewer, all ending in regulation.

With little separating the two clubs during the regular season, Game 1 is expected to be tight and Montreal’s lineup tweaks could play an early role in setting the tone.
