Ahead of the 2022-23 season, the Montreal Canadiens announced the appointment of Nick Suzuki as the team’s captain. While most fans and pundits agreed with the franchise’s decision, controversy still emerged when Suzuki was urged by several of Quebec’s major party leaders to learn French to connect with fans. Quebec premier François Legault said the Habs made an “excellent choice” as he described Suzuki as one of the team’s best players, before adding that the young centre now has to learn French.

Fast forward to January when on Wednesday, Sportsnet’s Eric Engels revealed that “roughly 8-10 Montreal Canadiens are meeting with a French teacher today after expressing a desire to learn the language. A plan will be built based on their schedule after this initial meeting.”

Engels does not mention that Suzuki is part of that group though it would make sense that he takes part in the program seeing that he came under fire for his poor knowledge of the French language when he was elected captain.

This is however a great show of unity in the Canadiens’ dressing room to see that teammates are doing this together.

Learning a new language isn’t easy, but when you have the support of your peers and the many opportunities to practice together, this could be a great success for the players involved.

Of course, this report will have the die-hard French folks thrilled to hear that a program is in motion for more of the province’s official language in the Habs’ room.
