Disaster strikes the Canucks while they aren't even playing.
The status of Vancouver Canucks forward Filip Chytil is making the organization's decision to acquire him look worse and worse by the day.
On Friday, Canucks head coach Adam Foote spoke with members of the media during the National Hockey League's Olympic break and confirmed that, in spite of the fact that his team is not currently playing, 26 year old forward Filip Chytil was once again injured. This time it appears that Chytil suffered the injury while he was on the ice practicing with his teammates, with the Czechian forward suffering the injury after he was struck in the face by a puck. Foote confirmed that Chytil has suffered a facial fracture as a result of the incident and will miss time, although it remains uncertain if he will need surgery or not.
Although Foote didn't seem fully certain of the details of what led up to the injury, he did indicate that he believed a puck deflected off of a skate before striking Chytil in the face.
"I think it went off of one of our defensemen's skates," said Foote during his media availability.
This will be a particularly tough blow for both Chytil and the Canucks given the fact that Chystil has now played in a total of just 27 games for the Canucks over the course of the last two seasons. Chytil was of course acquired in the controversial trade that sent former Canucks star forward J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers and that deal continues to look worse with each new injury that keeps Chytil out of the lineup.
As I mentioned Chytil has just 27 games under his belt as a Canuck and that includes just 5 goals and 4 assists for a total of 9 points since the trade. Miller on the other hand has played 80 games as a New York Ranger since the deal with 27 goals and 44 assists to his name over that period of time, a total of 71 points.
I expect that this news will be met with quite a bit of frustration when it comes to the Vancouver Canucks fan base, and understandably so.
