It has been a uniquely terrible season for the Vancouver Canucks who not only saw their star defenseman traded away mid-season, but currently sit with by far the worst record in the entire National Hockey League for the 2025-26 regular season.

To say that the Canucks have been dysfunctional in recent years would be a massive understatement with the team seemingly imploding after the defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2024 Western Conference Final, a playoff series that was less than 2 years ago.

This week we were treated to the latest example of that dysfunction when the picture around the general manager's position in Vancouver became very cloudy. Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal reported that the Canucks had blocked the Nashville Predators attempts to speak with Canucks assistant general manager Ryan Johnson, a sign that perhaps the Canucks themselves see bigger things in the future for Johnson.

If that is indeed the case that would leave serious questions about the future of current Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin, although Allvin himself may already have something lined up. According to Canucks reporter Patrick Johnston, there are rumblings that Allvin may be set to join former Canucks star defenseman Quinn Hughes in Minnesota.

From Johnston:

One league source thinks if he gets outright fired he will wind up moving to Minnesota to work as GM Bill Guerin’s top scout, superseding Judd Brackett.

First and foremost it is extremely rare to hear an NHL general manager being linked to another job while still actively working for an NHL team, but even more controversial here is Allvin's rumored destination. After a blockbuster trade between the Canucks and Wild earlier this season, it certainly would be curious to see Allvin quickly move over to the competition.
