Trade imminent ?!
The Vancouver Canucks are sitting veteran defenseman Tyler Myers for Tuesday’s matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, and it’s not due to injury: it’s about trade considerations.
Sources say Myers was presented with a trade option two days ago and is taking his time to evaluate it with his agent, J.P. Barry. The Canucks are reportedly open to moving the right-shot blue liner, and management appears willing to listen to offers before the NHL trade deadline.
Multiple teams are circling, previously reported Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Citizen. The Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, and the Utah Mammoth are all said to be seeking a right-handed defenseman. Myers checks many boxes for contenders: a massive wingspan, physical presence, and offensive upside.
At $3 million per season with only one year remaining, Myers is also relatively affordable. If the Canucks are willing to retain up to 50% of his cap hit, he becomes an even more attractive option for teams looking to bolster their blue line down the stretch. Myers currently holds a full NMC, which converts to a 12-team no-trade list this summer. So, there's an element of pressure lingering in the background as Myers weighs his options.
Earlier on Wednesday, insider Kevin Weekes had reported that Vancouver is fielding plenty of calls on Myers and he could be on the move shortly.
While Vancouver is in the midst of a rebuild, trading an experienced veteran like Myers could provide valuable assets for the future, especially if a team comes calling with the right offer. For now, Myers remains in deliberation, and the Canucks are holding him out of the lineup to avoid any distractions as decisions are finalized.
