A terrible look for the owners of the Vancouver Canucks.
The owners of the Vancouver Canucks, Francesco Aquilini and the Aquilini Family, have once again found themselves on the wrong side of fan backlash after ejecting a reporter from Rogers Arena last week.
That reporter, Trevor Beggs of Daily Hive Vancouver, revealed that his media credentials were stripped during last Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Kings. Not only was Beggs stripped of his credentials, but he reported being escorted out of the building in the middle of the game.
Beggs believes that he was removed and striped of his credentials over a story he published about the owners of the Canucks franchise, the Aquilini Family. While there is no way of knowing the motivations behind the decision to treat Beggs in such a manner, the fact that he was removed has since been corroborated by Patrick Johnson of the Vancouver Province.
Being pulled from the building is as big as it gets. And it’s now drawn attention to a story that wasn’t drawing much attention before.
This is what’s known as the Streisand effect. Daily Hive’s Trevor Beggs was removed from the rink on Thursday. He believes it’s because of how he framed a story.
There's no question that the decision has brought much more attention to the story than there was prior to Beggs being striped of his credentials. As Johnson mentions this is a case of the Streisand Effect, where the attempt to silence a story only results in exponentially more people learning of that story's existence.
Johnson, who has covered the Canucks extensively for years, stated that he does not believe he has seen a reporter escorted out of a building during a game at any point in recent memory.
The decision to eject Beggs from the building was certainly a controversial one, and unfortunately the Canucks it seems to have created the exact opposite reaction that Canucks ownership was hoping for.
