Any team hoping to acquire Hughes will face steep demands from Vancouver management.
The Vancouver Canucks are once again at the center of trade speculation, this time surrounding star defenseman Quinn Hughes. The rumors have grown so loud that head coach Adam Foote recently admitted they have reached the dressing room and affected the entire roster.
After a rough start to the 2025-26 season, the trade chatter intensified, especially when reports linked Hughes to the New Jersey Devils, where younger brothers Jack and Luke play. Jack had previously told reporters he hopes to play with Quinn at some point in his NHL career, adding another layer to the speculation.
Hughes, signed through the 2026-27 season with a $7.85-million cap hit and a no-trade clause, has been leading the Canucks offensively. Through 26 games, he has tallied two goals and 23 points, tied for the team lead.
According to hockey insider Nick Kypreos, any team hoping to acquire Hughes would have to meet a steep asking price.
“It seems the going rate for a team wishing to acquire Hughes is a combination of four or five pieces, including roster players, prospects and first-rounders. The Canucks are seeking those first-rounders to be unprotected,” Kypreos explained.
The combination of Hughes’ talent, contract security, and the Canucks’ demanding price makes any potential trade a monumental challenge. But several suitors keep studying the possibility of acquiring a top player like Quinn Hughes.
In his latest 32 Thoughts column on Sportsnet, insider Elliotte Friedman also commented the whole trade chatter madness in Vancouver, adding what he knows about the astronomical asking price:
“This is what I’m least certain about. Vancouver has to get this right. I’ve heard the ask is very high, as it should be. One exec told me it is “outrageous.” I replied, “Probably not outrageous enough.” He laughed.”
Friedman also added that many suitors are expected to take a shot at acquiring Quinn Hughes, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals and Devils.
For now, Vancouver’s management and players face uncertainty as the season progresses, knowing that even the hint of a trade could have a ripple effect throughout the dressing room.
