The National Hockey League has a trade on Sunday morning.
This one is between the New Jersey Devils and the Washington Capitals and perhaps unsurprisingly we are seeing the Devils offloading a goaltender after their big Connor Hellebuyck trade last month.
According to an official press release from the Devils organization, they have dealt goaltender Remi Poirier to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 7th round draft selection at the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.
While this might seem like a relatively minor trade, and it is, the Devils are going to be very pleased with themselves here. Poirier was only acquired by the Devils a few short weeks ago when they picked him up off of waivers from the Dallas Stars, the team that drafted Poirier in 2020 and spent several seasons developing him.
Poirier is coming off of a 52 game season with the Stars' American Hockey League affiliate, the Texas Stars, where he looked good with a .912 save percentage and a 2.61 goals against average on the season.
The Devils now walk away with a 7th round pick in an upcoming draft and it cost them absolutely nothing but some shrewd business to get it done, while the Stars are left empty handed.
