Capitals fire coach Mitch Love after dark details of NHL investigation are revealed.

The Washington Capitals have wasted little time.

In an official announcement made via the Capitals department of public relations, the Capitals announced on Sunday that they were parting ways with assistant coach Mitch Love due to the findings of an investigation conducted by the National Hockey League.

"Mitch Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately," said the team in a statement. "This decision follows the findings of an NHL-led investigation into past allegations. The organization is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability."

The news comes as no surprise given the dark and disturbing details that have already begun to emerge regarding the league's investigation into Love, with NHL insider Frank Seravalli sharing a number of those details earlier today.

According to Seravalli, the league's investigation was into allegations of domestic violence from Love's past and following the conclusion of the investigation the league itself has made the decision to suspend Love for the entire 2025-26 NHL season.

Love was rumored to be a favorite to take over several vacant NHL head coaching positions over the summer, including vacancies with the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Seattle Kraken, and part of what Seravalli revealed on Sunday likely explains why Love failed to secure any of those jobs. The insider reports that the alleged victim in this case reported their allegations to the NHL directly, leading to the investigation and that they also reported those allegations to the team's that Love was interviewing with over the summer.

While Love has only been suspended for a single season the disturbing implications of that suspension and his subsequent termination from his position with the Capitals will likely leave a lasting stain on his reputation moving forward. Whether or not he will be able to find work in the NHL again in the future with that kind of dark cloud hanging over his head remains to be seen.
