According to Washington Capitals insider Tarik El-Bashir, the Capitals have hired former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach Spencer Carbery as the team's new head coach.

Carbery, a first time NHL head coach, replaces veteran NHL coach Peter Laviolette. The 41 year old Carbery though has significant experience with the Capitals' organization though as he was head coach of their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears for three seasons before joining the Leafs.

ESPN insider Emily Kaplan reports that it's a four year deal for Carbery with the Capitals.

More from Kaplan:

The Washington Capitals are hiring Spencer Carbery as their next head coach, sources confirmed to ESPN.

Carbery, 41, was one of the buzziest names on the coaching circuit. He most recently was an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs, running their power play. He now returns to the Washington Capitals organization, where he came up through the ranks coaching for their ECHL and AHL affiliates.
