Carey Price shocks fans with his unexpected beer league role

Carey Price spent his entire NHL career between the pipes, backstopping the Montreal Canadiens through some of their most memorable moments and earning a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. But now that his playing days at the highest level are behind him, the legendary netminder has traded in his goalie pads for a forward's role in beer league hockey.

Price reportedly skates regularly on Wednesday and Friday mornings and also participates in the Thursday Night Hockey League in Kelowna, a competitive recreational circuit that features former NHL players, European pros, and college hockey alumni.

The transition from goaltender to skater is unusual enough on its own, but Price's sense of humor about it makes the story even better.

According to NHL.com, when the San Jose Sharks acquired his contract last fall, Price had a memorable exchange with general manager Mike Grier. "I asked Mike Grier if they needed a left winger, and he said 'probably not,'" Price recalled with a laugh.

Price's NHL career was ultimately cut short by a combination of knee injuries and other health challenges that prevented him from returning to game action after the 2020-21 season. Despite the difficult ending, his resume speaks for itself. A Vezina Trophy, a Hart Trophy, and a Ted Lindsay Award highlight a career that culminated in his Hall of Fame induction.

Still, the image of one of the greatest goaltenders of his generation lining up as a winger in a Thursday night rec league is the kind of wholesome hockey content fans love to see. It speaks to Price's enduring passion for the game, even when the spotlight and the pressure of professional competition are long gone.

Price seems perfectly content trading the crease for open ice, enjoying the camaraderie of morning skates and evening beer league battles in Kelowna. And while the Sharks apparently did not need his services at left wing, his Thursday night teammates are surely happy to have a future Hall of Famer on their roster.
