Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final delivered plenty of drama on the ice, but one of the night’s most talked-about moments came from the stands.

With Carter Hart starting in goal for the Vegas Golden Knights, something other than an awesome play in the game became viral when chant appeared to break out among sections of the crowd at the arena.

According to ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, a group of fans in the upper deck could be heard chanting “No Means No” during Game 1.

The chant immediately drew attention online, with many viewers wondering whether they had heard it correctly.

Of course, the chant led many to connect it to Hart’s highly publicized involvement in the Hockey Canada case that has dominated headlines across the hockey world in recent years. Hart and players Michael McLeod, Dillon Dubé, Cal Foote, and Alex Formenton were charged in connection with an alleged 2018 incident in London, Ontario Hart and the four other former Canadian World Junior hockey players were found not guilty of sexual assault by an Ontario Superior Court judge on July 24, 2025.

Hart was also booed when he first emerged on the ice.

As a result, social media quickly erupted with debate over the incident, with many fans arguing the chant reflected the reality that major controversies inevitably follow players into opposing arenas, particularly during the Stanley Cup Final when the spotlight is at its brightest.

Regardless of where people stand, there is little doubt the moment became an unexpected talking point during a game that was supposed to focus primarily on the battle between Vegas and Carolina for the ultimate prize.

The incident also serves as another reminder that, in today’s sports landscape, fan reactions are no longer confined to the building itself. Moments like these are immediately amplified online, often becoming storylines of their own before the final buzzer even sounds.

As the series continues, it remains to be seen whether similar chants emerge in future games.
