We have seen the last of Casey DeSmith this postseason. On Friday morning, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced that
DeSmith had successful core muscle surgery this morning. He will be unavailable for the remainder of the playoffs.
DeSmith who limped off the ice and down the tunnel in the right corner during the second overtime of Game 1 of the series against the New York Rangers. The Penguins ended up winning the first contest in triple overtime, but the Blue Shirts evened out the series on Thursday night.
DeSmith got the start after the Penguins announced that Tristan Jarry was expected to miss Games 1 and 2 of their first-round matchup with the New York Rangers. The goalie missed the last six games of the regular season with a lower-body injury. After making 36 saves in a 6-3 win over the Islanders on April 14, Jarry was evaluated and given a status of week-to-week.
Jarry remains in a walking boot and keeps rehabbing, hoping to return in Round 1. His status remains the same as of Friday.
Other injury news for the Penguins: defenseman Brian Dumoulin and forward Richard Rakell remain day-to-day while forward Jason Zucker is a game-time decision for Saturday’s Game 3 in Pittsburgh.
