There hasn't been too much ugliness so far between the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens in their second round Stanley Cup playoff series, but if the first period of Game 3 is any indication that may be about to change.

Things have definitely started to heat up late in the period between these two teams with a scrum in front of the Sabres net perhaps serving as the catalyst. Towards the end of the first a scrum would erupt in front of the Sabres net which would result in Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon laying flat on his stomach for several seconds. While it looked like Lyon may have been shaken up on the play, he was merely trying to avoid being injured by the players pushing and shoving all around him.

The Canadiens would find themselves at a man disadvantage as a result of that scrum, but instead of calming down the situation that penalty only seemed to pour gasoline on to the fire.

When the final buzzer would sound to end the first period the two teams would once again come together and punches would fly from both sides as the officials on the ice struggled to maintain control. In fact control seemed to be the last thing they had a grasp of as chaos erupted around the officials who were simply unable to contain the carnage, at least initially.

Here is a look at the video of the scrum after the buzzer:
