After losing out on defenseman Noah Dobson, who was acquired from the New York Islanders by the Montreal Canadiens earlier on Friday, the Columbus Blue Jackets went after their next target on the block. According to Pierre LeBrun, the Jackets have just acquired Charlie Coyle from the Colorado Avalanche.

Coyle, along Miles Wood, moves to Columbus for Gavin Brindley, a 2025 3rd round pick (#77), and a 2027 2nd round pick. The condition on the 2nd Rd selection in ‘27 is that the Jackets have two 2nd round picks that year so can send lower one to Colorado.

Colorado clears $7.75 million off the cap moving both Coyle and Wood.

According to team insider Aaron Portzline, when the Blue Jackets were told about the Habs’ offer for Dobson, they were asked by the Islanders to give up both of its two first-round picks tonight (Nos. 14 and 20), as well as a roster player and another piece. Columbus refused and turned its attention to Coyle.

THIS IS THE FULL TRADE:
To CBJ
- Charlie Coyle (C)
- Miles Wood (LW)

To COL
- Gavin Brindley (C)
- 2025 3rd Round Draft Pick
- 2027 2nd Round Draft Pick

Coyle ended up in Denver at this past deadline on March 7 when he was moved by the Boston Bruins. He was acquiring by the Avs at the March 7 trade deadline in a deal that sent Casey Mittelstadt, prospect Will Zellers and a second-round draft pick to Boston. He was expected to bring a major boost up front for the Avalanche who were eliminated by the Dallas Stars and former teammate Mikko Rantanen in a heartbreaking 7 game series in Round 1.

When the Avalanche re-signed Brock Nelson after he too was acquired at the deadline, it felt like Coyle’s days in Colorado were numbered.

And now, he moves to Columbus.

Headed into the final year of a six-year, $31.25 million deal, Coyle took part in 19 games for the Avs last season after being acquired at the trade deadline from the Boston Bruins. He had two goals and 11 assists. He added another goal in seven playoff contests.

He is about to enter into his 14th NHL season. He is just 50 games away from the 1,000 games played mark.

As for Wood, he signed with Colorado as a free agent on July 1, 2023 and in two seasons with the Avalanche recorded 13 goals and 34 points in 111 games. He added three goals in 12 playoff outings.
