McAvoy won't have to wait long for his first chance at revenge after all.
I've gotten the distinction impression that Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is absolutely fuming about what transpired this week during a game between the Bruins and Florida Panthers.
It was during the first period of that contest that McAvoy was on the receiving end of what can only be described as a flying elbow from Panthers forward Sandis Vilmanis. Vilmanis very clearly launched himself up and into the face of McAvoy, striking him with the elbow, and fans were furious when the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety opted not to discipline Vilmanis for the infraction.
McAvoy expressed his own displeasure at the decision by publishing a video of the incident as well as a picture of the damage done to his face through social media.
Normally McAvoy would have to wait quite some time for his chance at revenge with the NHL taking an extended hiatus during the Olympic Games, but an odd twist of fate will result in McAvoy getting that chance much sooner than you might expect. McAvoy is set to represent his home country, the United States of America, on the international stage at the Olympics this coming week and it just so happens that Team USA's very first game will be a preliminary round game against Team Latvia.
The Latvian squad will feature none other than the aforementioned Sandis Vilmanis, who will be representing his home country at these upcoming Olympic Games as well.
Fighting is strictly prohibited during Olympic events and doing so would result in an outright ejection from the tournament, so don't expect to see McAvoy, or anyone else, dropping the gloves. I do however expect that McAvoy will be keeping his eyes peeled for Vilmanis during their matchup this coming Thursday, and I won't be surprised if McAvoy attempts to get a measure of revenge.
