Charlie McAvoy shares gruesome details in first comments since injury.

The Boston Bruins have been without the services of star defenseman Charlie McAvoy for several games now and unfortunately it is going to be a while still before McAvoy can make his official return to the lineup.

McAvoy has been absent since suffering a gruesome facial injury when he was struck by a one-timer from the blue line courtesy of Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson, a blow that McAvoy has now revealed resulted in a linear jaw fracture and the loss of several of his teeth.

"A linear fracture right here, all the way down," said McAvoy pointing to his jaw. "Some displacement, lost a lot of teeth on the bottom. I'll save you the visual, just take my words for it."

McAvoy was asked if he knew how bad things were when he was struck by the puck, and the Bruins blue liner admitted that he knew immediately he was in rough shape.

"Yeah I knew we were in trouble there," admitted McAvoy. "You don't take a slap shot to the jaw, I knew right away I was in trouble."

While McAvoy has undergone successful surgery and is reportedly healing well, he has also had to deal with some unique challenges when it comes to this type of an injury.

"The diet that's the toughest part, is just trying to get what you need," revealed McAvoy. "Without being able to eat solid food I've lost a lot of weight, but I'm working my way back down."

McAvoy revealed that he lost 20 lbs as a result of his inability to eat solid foods, something he won't be able to do until his jaw has fully healed.

"With the lost weight you feel weak and energy is kind of tough to come by," revealed McAvoy. "I lost close to 20 lbs in that first week and a half there, so it's a shock to your body."

While fans are eager to see McAvoy on the ice, I know that they are more than willing to let him take the time he needs to fully recovery from the horrible ordeal he has had to go through this season. The mere fact that McAvoy spoke to reporters on Friday, with his jaw still clearly causing him discomfort and altering his speech, is a sign that he is just as eager to return if not more so.
