Chris Chelios sends message to Patrick Kane during jersey retirement.

Chris Chelios had some words for the former Chicago Blackhawks forward during his jersey retirement ceremony.

It was Chris Chelios' big day at the United Center on Sunday, with the Hall of Fame defenseman set to have his jersey retired by the Chicago Blackhawks, but it was also a big day for a different reason with former Blackhawks superstar Patrick Kane returning to the United Center for the first time as a visiting player.

Both of those combined made for a must-see type of game on Sunday, but if you forgot to tune in early you may have missed a great display of class from a true legend of the National Hockey League. As Chelios was acknowledging those who had helped him reach this point during his jersey retirement speech, he took a moment to acknowledge and even appreciate the returning Patrick Kane.

Chelios, in yet another great display of class, stated that Kane would go down as the greatest American born hockey player to ever lace up skates in the NHL and added that Kane would one day stand in the same place when his jersey is someday retired at the United Center. This in turn resulted in a standing ovation for Kane, a standing ovation that included the likes of The Great One Wayne Gretzky himself.

Chelios ended it all with a bit of humour, warning Kane not to steal his thunder.

If you missed the incredible moment, don't worry you can check it out in the short clip below:
