Fans in Detroit are furious with the owner of the Red Wings.
The Detroit Red Wings earned a bit of a reprieve this week when they announced that they had signed forward Alex DeBrincat to a 7 year contract with an average annual value and salary cap hit of $13 million per season.
Prior to the signing of DeBrincat the Red Wings were dealing with serious backlash from their own fans in regards to a number of factors including the trade request of former captain Dylan Larkin, the trade request of top pairing defenseman Simon Edvinsson and the firing of general manager Steve Yzerman as well as the subsequent failure to replace him despite a months long search prior to the start of the regular season... just to name a few.
Unfortunately that buffer from the DeBrincat signing didn't last long with some fans taking exception to comments made by Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch this week, just one day after the DeBrincat signing was announced.
"I think what is happening, the direction I’m taking this franchise is the right direction,"said Ilitch this week as per The Athletic.
It isn't the first time that Ilitch has tried to speak to his fan base since the Red Wings were serenaded with chants of "Sell the team" in the opening games of the regular season, but despite his best efforts the response from fans has largely been a negative one.
Ilitch first reached out to fans through LinkedIn and more recently met with select reporters and fielded questions, with some fans very critical of the fact that Ilitch has yet to speak live and in front of the cameras.
It seems the Red Wings may have a long way to go before regaining the trust of an angry fan base.
