Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch responds.... but he may have made things even worse.

The Detroit Red Wings are looking like the most dysfunctional organization in the National Hockey League right now and angry Red Wings fans have let their displeasure be heard loud and clear in the first few games of the season.

The chants, unlike the chants you typically hear at a sporting event, were not directed at the players on the ice or even at the people currently managing the Red Wings front office, and instead were very clearly directed at Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch.

"Sell the team, sell the team," the crowd could be heard chanting over and over again.

On Monday night, Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch responded directly to those chants when he took to social media platform LinkedIn and shared what felt like a rather generic message with his team's frustrated fan base.

From Ilitch:

Opening night in the NHL is always something special. And Friday night, as our Detroit Red Wings began a new season at Little Caesars Arena, Hockeytown showed up.

A century of hockey, and more Stanley Cup wins than any other American NHL team, only happens with dedication and resilience. That Red Wings spirit is a constant through the seasons, from the coaches and players to the arena staff-like our incredible Ice Crew and broadcasters-and of course, generations of fans. I enjoyed visiting with many of them before the game to thank them for their part in our story and continuing it forward.

At the same time, I recognize fan frustrations. I get it and certainly feel the same. Like our city, the Red Wings have experienced incredible triumphs and faced difficult challenges but have always met them with grit and determination.

As the franchise begins its 101st season, I remain focused on building the championship-level organization that our Red Wings family and fans deserve.

While Ilitch acknowledging the frustration of fans is certainly a step in the right direction, given what has transpired over the summer I don't think this will do much to appease those angry fans.
