Training camp is fast approaching for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and all eyes are on the health of their veteran blue liner Chris Tanev. But as of early September, the rugged defenseman has still not received medical clearance to return to action.

Despite that, Tanev struck an optimistic tone in comments reported by the Toronto Star, indicating the target remains a return for the opening day of camp.

"I'm feeling good. We still have to talk to the doctors, I think, in a week or two," Tanev said. "But the plan is hopefully I'm ready to rumble once everything gets going."

The 36-year-old made it clear that the road back has been anything but smooth. He acknowledged the difficulty of his rehabilitation process while expressing confidence in the effort he has invested to get himself ready.

"I still love playing. I love being around the guys, and I love working hard," Tanev added. "It wasn't an easy rehab. I'm confident in all the work I've put in, and I feel like I've worked extremely hard. I've just got to keep checking boxes and get to where I need to be."

Tanev's availability is a significant storyline for a Leafs team that relies heavily on his physical, shutdown style of play on the back end. His presence on the right side has been a stabilizing force since arriving in Toronto, and any extended absence would leave a notable gap in the defensive corps.

The fact that a medical consultation is still a week or two away means the situation remains fluid. While the plan is clearly to have Tanev ready for camp, there is no guarantee the doctors will give him the green light on the timeline he is hoping for.

Some fans have already urged caution, suggesting the team should avoid rushing Tanev back the way they may have in the past. Toronto does have depth options on defense, and there is a belief that younger players could step up if needed to buy Tanev more time.

The Leafs and their fans will have to wait on those upcoming medical evaluations. If all goes well, Tanev should be suiting up when camp opens. If not, Toronto may need to lean on its contingency plans earlier than expected.
